Trishaws were a common mode of transportation roughly a century ago in Singapore. First introduced as rickshaws where they were pulled, bicycles were later added to become three-wheeled trishaws. Trishaw riders were primarily Chinese immigrants who had worked as coolies or rickshaw pullers and had little skills. It is believed that they arrived in Singapore around the period of World War II. Today’s trishaw riders serve mainly tourists as a unique way of exploring the city.
